I Will Stand with You
SATB divisi choir, unaccompanied
Part song
Struck by racial violence, the Festival Singers of Florida commissioned this work by their own Marques L. A. Garrett. The text was crafted in part from notes and messages to the composer by singers from the group. The work begins with a plaintive cry for mercy, moves through introspection and requests of forgiveness, and resolves to do justly, to love kindness, and to walk humbly.
Say her name.
“I can’t breathe.”
“Please don’t let me die.”
“You shot me.”
“I’m just different.”
But are you different? We are different yet the same.
How could I have been so blind?
The hurt and pain were there.
The hatred was hidden.
I am truly sorry.
I will be where racism ends.
We’ll strive to be better. I acknowledge your pain.
We’ll strive to be better. I’ll understand your fear.
We’ll strive to be better. I’ll fight for your rights.
I will stand with you.
